Accent reduction involves the changing of one's production of a non- native language through analysis and reduction of the native language's influence on the non-native language.

These influences are identified, and then reduced, with primary focus on the following areas: pronunciation of vowel and consonant sounds, and intonation (appropriate syllabic stress and the speech melody).Culturally determined, nonverbal communication behaviors that are also addressed as appropriate may include eye contact, gestures, conversational style and turn-taking, personal space, and smiling. Accent reduction is also appropriate for the native speaker of American English whose speech is negatively influenced by a regional accent.

The accent reduction process has three steps: consultation, evaluation, and training.

The initial consultation is free.

It is an information-gathering session to determine whether one needs accent modification and to establish realistic goals. If you decide to begin training, there is a thorough evaluation of current speech, which is followed by the training.
